Who is smart enough to answer all of these correctly?
1. The number of bankruptcy cases went from 1,300 to 1,600 in one year. What is the percent increase?
2. A cities population was 148,424 as of July, 1998, up from 120,284 in July, 1990. What is the percent change in population from 1990-1998?
3. Of the 850 students, 265 had A's and B's and 165 failed. What fraction of the students had a grade of B or better? What fraction failed?
4. If the state put $1 million of its surplus in 8-percent government bonds, it would realize a return of how much money a year?
5. The city hopes to sell the $2 million construction bond issue at an interest rate of no more than 7 percent, but some officials say it would be more likely to go at 7.5 percent, which would mean $_____ a year more in interest payments over the 20-year life of the bonds, or $________ more in interest over the life of the bond issue.

Sounds like an IQ test.. and I dislike those. Let's just say cleverness is always more important than smartness

1. Roughly 32% or so? 2. Ah, 29%? 3. A tad more than 19% failed, nearly 31% got A and B. 4. $80.000, if gov bonds function anything like regular banks 5. $10.000 the first year, and assuming interest accumulates and then gathers more interest (as in normal bank savings), roughly $225.000 (I think) over 20 years.

Since tvpr answred i'll give some numbers too
1) About 22% 2) About -19% 3) 31% A/B and 19% failed. 4) 80k 5) didn't bother to look up the statistics formula (tvpr may have done that though). The starting number does seem right for the first year.

I just ran it through my head in a hurry; my math is terrible though, so don't take anything I say for facts

These questions were given to 50 6th graders and 50 seniors in college.
The 6th graders got far more accurate answers.

That doesn't mean the older people are any less smart, they just aren't being taught that type of maths at the time. When I was in school I was great at almost all maths, but because I don't use it any more, I've just forgotten it all. It's the same with French, I remember the odd bits but nothing really worthwhile.
The question should really be, how well do you retain mathematical knowledge/skills in your long-term memory?

Exactly Halibut! That is one of the factors the poll is taking in to consideration.
