http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/7808697.stm.jpg) Matt Smith has been named as the actor who will take over from David Tennant in Doctor Who - making him the youngest actor to take on the role.
At 26, Smith is three years younger than Peter Davison when he signed up to play the fifth Doctor in 1981.
Smith will first appear on TV screens as the 11th Doctor in 2010. Christopher Eccleston was relieved of the role too soon since he was the best of the recent Doctors imo.

As long as he makes the role his own and unique, and doesn't try to copy the other doctors it should be good. (Although I guess it depends what the writers decide at the end of the day).

Why do britons seem so excited about this? The whole matter occupies the top 3 or so lists of both most read and e-mailed in both England and Australia on BBC. While Gaza's getting it good. Whyyyy is this?

Who is Doctor Who? And as TVPR asked, why is it so interesting? And no, Phake, don't post a link from wikipedia, I can find it there myself.

There's a very high probability I won't do that. And adding the fact that the above conversation is extremely un-intriguing, the chances of me watching it haven't increased one bit.

I remember watching Dr.Who back in mid '80s, when I was a kid... and nightmares I had because of those huge worms or larvae or whatever they were. All that made a scar in my mind and even as I write this I have shivers

I... _think_ it's some sort of Bond-ish thing. Only with no fast cars, no evil Soviets, no Dr. No, no sexy Bond-girls, and no license to kill. Bond without the good stuff. So not like Bond at all, really.

It's sci-fi for prime-timeSaturday evenings. The Doctor is a Time Lord with two hearts who travels in the T.A.R.D.I.S. Every week he gets involved in various adventures and problems, with recurring baddies, like the Cyber Men and the Daleks ("We will exterminate..."). He generally has a female side-kick who used to be vacuous but are now urban and street wise.
Because the BBC likes spending money on it, the newest series all looks great, the effects and costuming are good, there's just a lot of the same things happening over and again, very repetitive and ridiculous.

So basically Stargate SG1, only with no false gods, no killer robots, no voluptous aliens, and no intergalactic alliances?
