Edit 2 - The mobo port has woken from its hiatus. But I need an extra ethernet card. What chipsets come recommended?

What the beejums are you talking about? If you have edited your post, how will we what the problem originally was and what exactly it is you are after?

Well it's VIA and it's futile to look for solutions on the web! But I need a replacement card to get rid of my shitty SMC ethernet one. I think I'll be going with Trendnet if I can find it.

An ethernet card is surely just an ethernet card? Unless you're looking for something fancy.

Not at all.. But sometimes they bundle ancient chipsets with supposedly newer products, like the way they've been doing it with TV tuners for instance. The SMC card has an ADMtek AN983 chipset that has outdated config options (AutoSense isn't the same as AutoNegotiation, for instance) and caused me problems (with all driver variations I might add). The odd thing is I didn't buy it too long ago.

Interesting. An ethernet card is just something you stick a network cable into when a wireless connection is not available as far as I'm concerned Tongue

Linksys. 3Com. Intel. Realtech. All are solid.

Thank you! I went to a store this evening but didn't get one because the clerk was irritating. Anom I still detest wireless with a passion Tongue I still prefer a few of the older standards (Firewire, 802.3, etc).

Fair enough, but wireless is much easier you know Wink

For pure data transfer you can't beat a wired connection of course!

I'm not sure how ethernet in general (802.3) is an older standard... at any rate. i personally go for best tool for the job so my new computer is in fact wireless... yes my transfer speed over lan isn't as great as it could be but other than that... it would take 3 or 4 times the speed of the outside connection to come close to topping my max transfer speed out... and i don't get to deal with pulling cable everywhere (the router is in a different room quite far away).

Anyways. Either linksys (wireless) or intel (wired) are great cards as i mentioned, either of those won't treat you wrong...
