I have part of my thesis due on the 24th and all I have done is;

1. INTRODUCTION

Over the passed several years internet terrorism has been brought to the front line of the medias attention. Due to the wide spread adoption of high speed Internet conceptions regular users with no technical knowledge have the potential to bring large scale online systems to their knees. [SOURCE]

A DoS attack involves a user sending invalid requests to a legitimate system many times per second resulting in those systems being unable to supply legitimate users with their service. [SOURCE]

However, large organisations generally have Internet connections with enough bandwidth handle the incoming amount of traffic from the Internet terrorist. However users have become sophisticated enough to infiltrate unsuspecting users on unprotected computers commandeering their system and their Internet connection. These controlled systems in the media are referred to as Zombies.

Then using the full power of hundreds, sometimes thousands of computers focus a DoS attack on a single target. This is known as a Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack, and given a malicious user control over enough Zombies at his disposal no organisation is protected or immune to such an attack.

Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks are a relatively new phenomena, with the most public demonstration occurring in Feb 6 – Feb 11, 2000 where Yahoo, Buy.com, eBay, Amazon, Datek, E*Trade, and CNN were all forced off the Internet. [SOURCE]

The ability to track malicious users is of great concern to researches and organisations, because due to the nature of the Internet and its fundamental building blocks TCP/IP, users are able to remain anonymous by hiding or spoofing their address while causing serveer damage to other systems.

DDoS attacks are quite varied because they exploit a wide range in existing internet protocols and applications. As a result there is no single solution to protect an organization from an assault.

Due to this lack of protection, much research is being done by academia and private organizations to identify steps that can be taken to protect organizations from DDoS attacks. Many of the techniques that exist today have an associated cost and organizations based on their own requirements and budgets have to decide which techniques they can afford to implement.

The focus of this document is to critically analyse the existing research into protecting systems from DDoS attacks and determine the effectiveness of that approach and the associated cost of implementing it.

Excuse hahahaa!?!!

Computer Science at La Trobe University have a 100% no extention policy.... period.

If you have a car accident, someone dies or you get your arm blown, no extention will be granted! You hand in what you have done on the due date and then apply for special consideration and hope the panel reviewing it give a stuff.

Death's in the family have to be immediate or someone whom you live with, each will need photocopied evidence that its true and it cant be more than a week ago.

I'llness (or arms blowing off) requires a doctors certificate. But either way, you hand in what you have done..... and apply for special consideration, also you have to apply for consideration no more than 24 hours after the due date or it is not considered.

In Com Sci at La Trobe University any special consideration is gone through the faculty through a panel of people, heavily scritinised.... the lecturer has no say on it.

Their is no such thing as making up an excuse.

Each day we hand it in late we loose 10%. After 4 days late it is not excepted, even with special consideration........ department policy, no loop holes...

I think im going to hand it in 1 day late... because weekends and public holidays dont count...

So even though I lose 10% I get Easter Friday and the Weekend off to do it.... still writing 5000 words from researched journels.. is going to be insane..

Its only a draft of the first part of the thesis... but we still get marked on it... and needed to be quite reputable... : /

Have no idea how I went...  wont know for a couple of weeks yet.. have a presentation I have to do on my handed in thesis part in like 3 days.. so I have to prepare a speech..

Yuk.. I hate public speaking.. you would think someone who types as much shit as I do could do it on a stand... but sadly it doesnt come as natural...

If only I could give my speech using ICQ..
