Welcome to bhlegend dot com's frequently asked questions section. Please read the following collection of questions and answers carefully before you contact our support team.
You will find a link to our contact page at the bottom of this FAQ.

NOTICE: Instructions on how to download games from bhlegend dot com can be found on our 'Download instructions' page.

Question: How do you install the games?
Answer: After downloading a game, locate the file that you have downloaded and double-click it. A window will open. Click on 'Extract' right away if you want to install the game into the current folder or otherwise type in the path of a different folder on your hard disk prior to clicking on 'Extract'. Please refer to the 'Further information' field found on the game's page on bhlegend for instruction on how to run the game itself.

!!!IMPORTANT: READ THIS BEFORE GOING ANY FURTHER!!!
Majority of old, DOS based games will have trouble running on modern OS'. The easiest way to make them work is to use a DOS emulator. Yes, such thing does exist and is fairly easy to use. Currently, the best DOS emulator is DOSbox. We strongly recommend you to download and use it. It will make the most of the old games work flawlessly.

The rest of this section is only for those who are experiencing trouble with games that still don't run even with DOSbox.

Question: There is no sound. What can I do?
Answer: In some cases, settings have to be adjusted in order to get the game to run with sound enabled. Refer to the 'Further information' box on each game page for detailed instructions.
If you are running an operating system based on Windows NT (such as Windows 2000 or Windows XP), sound may not work at all or a special driver has to be installed in order to get sound to work. Please refer to the 'Troubleshooting Guide' found at the end of this page.
Note that some games may not have sound at all.

Question: The game gives me an error message every time I try to run it or at a random point during the game. What can I do?
Answer: If possible (This can only be done under Windows 3.x, Windows 95 and 98), exit Windows into DOS mode. Locate the game's directory and try to run the game from there. You can return to windows by typing in 'win' at the command prompt. If that does not solve the problem, try to turn off the sound. Please also refer to the troubleshooting guide at the end of this page.

Question: How can I run a DOS game under Windows NT, Windows 2000 or Windows XP?
Answer: Due to Windows NT's lack (this also applies to Windows 2000 and Windows XP) of a native DOS mode, you may face many difficulties when trying to run a DOS game under any of these operating systems. Unfortunately the DOS emulation built into them does not fully replace "real" DOS and this results in games either not running at all or at least running with frequent crashes. There is no work-around for this problem at this time.
Please refer to our troubleshooting guide at the end of this page for further information.

Question: Why do some games run way too fast?
Answer: This is due to the fact that modern computers are often several times as fast as those computers that these games were originally written for. You can solve this problem by "artificially" slowing down your computer using software like "Moslo" which can be found on our "Utilities" page.
You can speed up (should I find this ironic?) the process of running a game with "Moslo" by copying the file "moslo.com" into the game's directory and by creating a new shortcut to the game with the following target: "C:\Game\moslo Game.exe". Please note that you will have to adjust both the path name ("C:\Game\") and the game's executable ("Game.exe") as this is just an example of what the target may look like.

Question: A "no EMS" error occurs. What can I do?
Answer: Open the file "Autoexec.bat" that can be found on drive C: at the root folder. You may want to create a backup copy before applying the following changes to it.
Locate the word 'NOEMS'. You will either find in in a line like "mode con codepage select=850 NOEMS" or in a line that starts with "EMM386". Remove the 'NOEMS' statement but leave the rest of each line intact or serious errors may occur. In the "EMM386" (if existent), replace the 'NOEMS' with the word 'RAM'.

Question: Sometimes the key I press on my keyboard and the character that appears on my screen are not identical. What's wrong?
Answer: This is due to the different kinds of key arrangements used "in the old days." also known as "QWERTY" and "AZERTY" (referring to the key order in the first row of keys on your keyboard). The following keys will usually be exchanged: A and Q, Z and W, M and the key found to the right of the "N" key (AZERTY) to the right of the "L" key (QWERTY).
When running a game in DOS mode, it might also be possible that no keyboard driver is loaded resulting in wrong key mappings. This is especially true for non-English keyboards with different key orders (eg. German keyboards with QWERTZ key order). Please refer to the troubleshooting guide at the end of this page for more information.

Question: How do I use an emulator?
Answer: Download and install the emulator of your choice. There are different emulators for different platforms and also each emulator emulates a different console or computer.
The next step is to download (game) ROMs and copy them into the corresponding folder on your hard disk (please refer to the emulator's documentation for detailed instructions on where to put the ROMs).
In most cases, it will be necessary to extract the ROM files as they are compressed. You can tell that a ROM file needs to be extracted by looking at the file's extension (.exe, .zip, .rar, .ace, .arj).
Once you have installed the ROM file properly, open your emulator and load the ROM. You should be able to play now.
Please also refer to the question: "What is 'kickstart' and where can I get one?"

Question: What are .adf, .sms or .c64 files?
Answer: Those file extensions usually indicate that you are dealing with ROM files for game consoles. In order to play these games, you will have to download and install an emulator (refer to previous question).

Question: I'm having trouble using the Amiga Emulator WinUAE. What can I do?
Answer: Make sure you use the latest Windows version of the program. If you use an old and/or non-Windows version, you can download the latest version from the WinUAE website. This site also contains detailed information on how to set-up WinUAE.
Please also refer to the following Website if you are having problems: Alternative WinUAE website.
Please keep in mind that WinUAE is not software written by bhlegend dot com or any of its team members. The WinUAE developers can be of much greater assistance when you are having troubles than we possibly could.

Question: What is 'kickstart' and where can I get one?
Answer: A kickstart ROM is part of the Amiga operating system and is somewhat comparable to the BIOS chip found inside a modern computer. Without a kickstart ROM, no Amiga could operate and neither can an Amiga emulator.
The Amiga kickstart is copyrighted material and thus it is illegal to own or obtain copies of one of a kickstart ROM unless you actually own a "real" Amiga.
You may be able to download Amiga kickstart ROMs from the web, however we can and will not help you with obtaining one so please don't ask us about it. And again, be warned that downloading an Amiga kickstart ROM without actually owning a "real" Amiga is illegal.

Question: I need help with a certain game. Where can I find walkthroughs?
Answer: You might be able to find walkthroughs, tips and tricks on the web. Use the search engine of your choice and type in the name of the game followed by the word "walkthrough".
The bhlegend dot com website also has a "Game Help" section created explicitly for the purpose of obtaining...err, game help (doh!).
You may also ask our support team, however, this is not a walkthrough website so helping you solve a certain game is basically a matter of good will.

Question: I'm looking for a certain game but cannot find it on your website. What can I do?
Answer: Please use the "Requests" section of our forum. We will under no circumstances follow requests for games that are not abandonware (i.e. games that have been discontinued by their creators and that are no longer being sold). Please understand that there is no way that we can follow all requests.

Question: You guys are great! How can I show my appreciation?
Answer: Well, we never actually get emails like that... but if you like this website and if you enjoy the games - maybe click on one of the banners on our website once in a while?
We'd also like to thank you for your continuing support. Without you, this website could not have existed for more than four years.
